San Diego Summer
Starting with the city our county is named after, these events are destined to keep your interest piqued all season long. July is when we celebrate America’s birthday (by the time you read this, June will be pretty much a beautiful memory).
Celebrate the 4th at the Big Bay Boom
Of course, our first major event is the spectacular Big Bay Boom, taking place at multiple viewing spots in San Diego, all overlooking the gorgeous San Diego Bay on July 4, 2026. Starting promptly at 9 PM and reflecting the brilliant pyrotechnic beauty in the sky to the calm waters below, it will be hard to NOT feel patriotic when sitting on the beach or a harbor-view balcony with family and friends! While the public viewing areas around the bay are entirely free, several local museums, such as the USS Midway, offer premium VIP viewing parties with catered food and drinks for around $50 to $100 per person.

Vibe by the Water at San Diego Bayfest
The reggae music plays, the local craft beers flow, and the food will be absolutely amazing at our second event, San Diego Bayfest. Held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Waterfront Park, this amazing outdoor music festival celebrates the vibrant, laid-back culture of the beach. You can expect a fantastic lineup of surf rock, ska, and reggae bands performing as the sun sets over the Pacific. Tickets are typically around $60 for general admission, and if you miss it, life will go on, it just won’t shine quite as brightly!
Experience the Quirky Over the Line Tournament
If you want to experience a truly authentic, homegrown San Diego summer tradition, head to Fiesta Island for the annual Over the Line (OTL) Tournament, taking place July 11-12 and 18-19, 2026. This unique beach bat-and-ball sport was invented right here in San Diego in the 1950s. Thousands of players and spectators gather on the sand for two consecutive weekends of sun, sportsmanship, and hilarious (and often mildly irreverent) team names. The event is completely free to attend as a spectator, making it a perfect, low-cost way to soak in the local culture.
Embrace Pop Culture at San Diego Comic-Con
And finally, it is time to go big or go home, and the perfect way to do so is with a visit to the one, the only, San Diego Comic-Con! Held July 23 through July 26, 2026, at the massive San Diego Convention Center, this is the ultimate chance to dress up as your favorite comic or movie character, attend exclusive industry panels, meet a few of your favorite actors, and purchase limited-edition merch that your friends will be incredibly jealous of! Daily badges usually cost around $75. If you can’t get enough of the convention floor, you may even want to plan a visit to the Comic-Con Museum, located in beautiful Balboa Park, and experience the wonders of the event’s history through the years!
Watch Art Come Alive at Pageant of the Masters
One of our favorite and most visually unique summer events in the region lasts from July 7 through September 3, 2026, ensuring that you have plenty of opportunities to explore the wonders offered at the legendary Pageant of the Masters! Located just up the coast at 650 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach, your favorite artists’ works really do come alive during this fascinating, 90-plus-year-old celebration of the arts! This year’s theme, “Art Colony: In the Company of Artists,” is sure to be unforgettable. As you sit in the outdoor amphitheater and watch real live humans expertly recreate your favorite classical art pieces, you may decide that you have found your newest summer obsession! Tickets for this breathtaking 2026 show range from $45 to $150 depending on seating.
Summer in Del Mar
If you are planning to explore the stunning coastal beauty of Del Mar, the village comes alive with a string of incredible activities that perfectly encapsulate the spirit of the season.
Final Days of the San Diego County Fair
The first few days of July are the last days to catch the incredible Annual San Diego County Fair. Held from June 10 through July 5, 2026, the theme of this year’s fair celebrates the great outdoors and offers everything about a county fair that you love and adore! From decadent, deep-fried fair food to impressive farm animals, crazy midway rides to beautiful fine art displays, this year’s fair promises to outdo all the ones from our past! General admission is roughly $20 for adults, making it an affordable day out for the whole family.

Place Your Bets at Del Mar Racing Opening Day
Right after the fairgrounds are cleared out, the turf is prepped for the most glamorous event of the season: Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack, taking place on Friday, July 17, 2026. This is the official kickoff to the summer horse racing season where the surf meets the turf. Don your most extravagant, wide-brimmed hat to compete in the famous Opening Day Hats Contest, sip on a signature Del Margarita, and feel the thunder of the thoroughbreds down the stretch. General admission tickets range from $30 to $50, while VIP hospitality packages run into the hundreds for a truly luxurious trackside experience.

Savor the Taste of New Orleans Food & Music Festival
In August, the deep south comes to the west coast as the Taste of New Orleans Food & Music Festival brings a vibrant burst of flavor to the Del Mar Village. Held at the Del Mar Race Track on August 8, 2026, this event pairs the thrill of horse racing with the soulful magic of the French Quarter. Bring your appetite for warm beignets, spicy gumbo, and refreshing hurricanes while listening to live jazz and brass bands. Festival access tickets are generally around $40, providing an incredible fusion of California sunshine and Louisiana charm.
Equestrian Elegance at the Del Mar Summer Festival II
If you are still in town on August 12 through August 16, 2026, and love the majesty of horses, the Del Mar Summer Festival II provides five days of horsey fun. This premier hunter/jumper equestrian competition showcases incredible athleticism and grace, with a show that is guaranteed to be loved by all! General daytime admission to watch the beautiful jumping rounds is often free or very low cost, with special evening grand prix events offering premium seating for around $25.
Summer in Carlsbad
Heading a bit further up the stunning North County coastline, Carlsbad offers its own unique brand of summer magic, prioritizing family-friendly arts and community enrichment.
Inspire the Youth at the San Diego International Kid’s Film Festival
This next event takes place in late August in Carlsbad and is one we can promise your kiddos will beg to be involved in! The San Diego International Kid’s Film Festival celebrates kids, the magic of movies, and reaches a global audience that stretches out over 40 countries! Held at the Carlsbad Senior Center (799 Pine Avenue) and taking place August 28 through August 30, 2026, it is the perfect, enriching way to say farewell to summer before the school year begins.
The festival offers an incredible opening night Gala, fascinating Culture Forums, a variety of industry panel discussions, and, of course, a wide variety of inspiring children’s movies spanning animation to live-action features. There will even be a glamorous Red Carpet Award Ceremony, honoring the filmmakers, actors, and writers that help bring magic to life on the silver screen! Daily passes run roughly $15, or you can grab an all-access weekend pass for around $50.

Discover New Sounds at the Carlsbad Music Festival
Rounding out the month is the highly anticipated Carlsbad Music Festival, affectionately known as “adventurous music by the beach.” Held during the last weekend of August 2026, this eclectic event transforms the walkable streets of Carlsbad Village into a tapestry of unique sounds. Featuring dozens of performances ranging from indie rock to contemporary classical and world music, the festival features both free outdoor community stages and ticketed VIP indoor venues (VIP passes usually run around $40). It’s a wonderful way to stroll the village, grab a gelato, and discover your new favorite band with the ocean breeze in your hair.
