Surfers on a beach in San Diego

Coronado Island

Coronado Island is a day trip from the mainland beach towns of San Diego County you don’t want to miss. Take a guided tour and learn about island history, including the first military flying school where sailors first learned to take off into the wild blue yonder. Include a stop at historic Hotel Del and get out of the sun to explore the historic structure. Fill out your schedule with shopping, dining, and other entertainment, often in air-conditioned buildings, before you catch the ferry back to the mainland.

Museum of Making Music

If there are students in the group, they might not get too excited at the aspect of a museum while on vacation. This unique museum will soon turn groans into smiles. Exhibits celebrate the history of music product production all the way back to the beginning of the 20th century and forward to today.

If you can, schedule your visit during a time when live music performances are showing there. Whenever you come, you’ll always be able to enjoy hands-on opportunities to pick up and play various instruments.

San Diego Hop On Hop Off Trolley Tour

If you hear the words “California” and “trolley,” your mind may jump straight to the iconic system in San Francisco. During your next getaway to San Diego County, make time for the one here, too. The trolley isn’t just a fun mode of transportation, though, it’s an easy and affordable way to get around without the headache of busy parking areas and expensive rates at popular attractions.

Tour the entire 11-stop route before choosing your favorite stops. The conductor is also a knowledgeable guide who can fill you in on everything there is to see and do along the route. “Hop off” and explore further, then “hop on” again at a later stop or when the trolley loops around to your location on a return trip. Trolleys are fully enclosed, so you can get out of the sun and heat while you travel the line and decide where to go next.

Witch Creek Winery

While the Carlsbad winery doesn’t grow its own grapes, it’s still a maker of delicious and award-winning wines. Stop and take in entertainment like live music, and open mic comedy nights. Beat the heat with a trip to the wine tasting room where you can taste by the one- or two-ounce taste, and more. Choose from an array of white, rose, red, and a variety of other specialty wines to pair with your next home-cooked meal.

Wildlife Watching

If you came to the area for a winter or spring getaway, you saw the migration of the gray whale. Come during the summer and keep your eyes peeled for the blue whale. They are the largest creatures on Earth, and the biggest group of blue whales in the world – 2,000-3,000 of them, feed off the California coast mid-June through September. Other species to keep your eye out for include dolphins, a myriad of fish, sea turtles, and more.

While the passenger area isn’t typically covered, the cooler weather and colder water further from shore will be a refreshing cool down.
