The annual summer vacation has long been a worldwide tradition, especially as there are no conflicts with school, but as schools are beginning to offer fall breaks that can last as long as two weeks, fall journeys are beginning to gain popularity as well. In the San Diego area, summer extends late into the fall, ensuring that travelers often return home looking tanned and relaxed as they spend much of their vacation moments hanging out at our beaches, coming home to the beauty of our Vacation Rentals by Kimberly sanctuaries at the end of every day. This guide to a fall journey spent exploring the towns and beaches that make up the San Diego area will help you fill in every line on your vacation itinerary! Here’s what to expect with a Fall Journey to Greater San Diego Area.
Every Day Can Be a Beach Day
You can’t visit this part of California and not spend at least one day with your toes buried in the sand, and as our properties at Vacation Rentals by Kimberly can be found throughout San Diego and the surrounding towns, you are assured that you will always be close to ocean. Watch the surfers (or join in the fun yourself) at Breakwater Bay Beach in Oceanside or at Terramar Beach in Carlsbad. Pet all the dogs at Del Mar Dog Beach in Del Mar, perhaps bringing along your own fur baby when you are staying in one of our Del Mar pet friendly retreats. And for our La Jolla guests, the very best beach in the state is Torrey Pines State Beach, offering crystal-white sands and towering cliffs that serve as a majestic backdrop to your family pics.
Epicurean Adventures
Our favorite memories of vacation experiences often revolve around the food we devoured while traveling, and your California vacation will be no exception. Start every day out the right way with a breakfast at Katy’s Café, located at 700 Seacoast Drive, Suite A106 in Imperial Beach, proudly offering one of the best breakfast sandwiches we have ever tasted. Katy’s Chipotle Bueno is very bueno indeed, created with your choice of meat, two eggs, pepper jack cheese, spinach, tomato, and a homemade chipotle sauce; this sandwich really packs in the flavor. And no matter how hearty your morning meal is, we can promise that by the time the sun is parked high in the sky, you will be ready for a delicious lunch at The Mission in Mission Beach. Located at 3795 Mission Boulevard, we absolutely devour their Tortilla Soup every time we stop by. When the dinner bell rings, the seafood dishes offered by Pacific Coast Grill never fail to please. Located at 2526 S Coast Highway 101 in Cardiff, their ocean views will bring you peace as you enjoy every bite of their Pacific Paella made with lobster tail, mahi, clams, shrimp, clams, and scallops.
Fun at the Festivals
The best way to get to know the area you are visiting is by attending the festivals that the residents attend every season, and perhaps one of our favorite fall festivals is Oktoberfest, even if it is a festival that celebrates something that is the opposite of California. The Carlsbad Oktoberfest, however, celebrates not just beer, wursts, and lederhosen, but family, pumpkin patches, and everything that represents fall. Sponsored by the Carlsbad Strawberry Country, located at 1050 Cannon Road, this sweet festival offers German food and beer, costume contests, corn mazes, and live music. Ocean Beach Oktoberfest is billed as San Diego’s wildest Oktoberfest, features drag shows, bratwurst eating contests, and an entertaining and ultimately refreshing (after you drink all of the beer) stein holding contest. And finally—or maybe we should have started with this one, as it is usually held the last weekend in September—Encinitas Oktoberfest is a 28-year-old tradition that costs nothing to attend. Offering vendors selling artistic wares, carnival rides, and all the beer you can gulp, this festival is yet another can’t-miss event!
