Take This Time to Truly Relax

Labor Day is not a holiday with parades, fireworks, or other special events; it is a day set aside to pay homage to American workers, a day when you should not have to labor at all. That doesn’t mean we expect you to stay in, watch TV, and nap all day, although you can if you want, but it does mean that there should be no urgency in your activities, that as you experience all that makes San Diego special on this September holiday you may find yourself walking a bit slower along the paths in the parks, scrutinizing exhibits at local museums a little more closely than you would under normal circumstances, and ordering dessert to go with the meal you just devoured.

Nomad Donuts for Breakfast, 3102 University Avenue in San Diego

Labor Day is a holiday that we think you should break all the rules, including the one that says you should eat healthily for breakfast. The donuts at Nomad Donuts have been our favorite for over 10 years and when they added bagels to their menu we jumped right on that bandwagon as well! Also serving a large menu of sandwiches, tacos, and offering vegetarian options, your breakfast may not be the healthiest, but we can promise it will be delicious and memorable.

San Diego Zoo Adventures, 2920 Zoo Drive in San Diego

The world-famous San Diego Zoo invites you to spend your San Diego Labor Day holiday talking to the animals! The zoo began after the exotic animals at the 1915 Panama-California Exposition were abandoned and then brought together by a San Diego doctor, kept safe in what would become the San Diego Zoo. Today, it continues the tradition of saving the animals, offering a collection of rare and endangered animals that might not have survived otherwise. And a day spent walking the trails, visiting the animals, and eating junk food is destined to be fun, even as the price of your ticket helps the zoo continue its worthy work.

Spending the Day at Balboa Park

Balboa Park is not your regular neighborhood park. It features a large number of gardens, museums, restaurants, and shops, offering guests a vacation experience that will be most delightful. The Cabrillo Bridge, which serves as one of the entrances to this stunning stretch of countryside, is the first of its type built in California and is the most beautiful of entrances, deserving of a photo op with its arched expanse in the background. Balboa Park is also the site of many concerts, events, and other celebrations throughout the year, and if you don’t visit, can you really consider yourself as having visited San Diego?

Abbey’s Real Texas BBQ, 6904 Miramar Road #211 in San Diego

A beautiful summer day deserves to be celebrated with barbecue, and Abbey’s Real Texas BBQ serves the best in a laidback eatery that will make you feel right at home. For over 40 years our families have devoured the meats that are slow-cooked in cast-iron smokers, heated with green oak and mesquite wood. And although you can certainly have your own barbecue at home in your Vacation Rentals by Kimberly summer sanctuary, this wonderful hot spot will give you the authentic taste without you having to do any of the work!
