A trip to San Diego is always worth your while and getting here comes with plenty of options. Whether you prefer to fly, drive, or take the train, you can customize your journey to elevate your California stay when getting to San Diego.

Flying into San Diego

Many travelers choose to fly into San Diego, and when they do, they often choose San Diego International Airport as their final destination. San Diego International Airport is located on scenic San Diego Bay just minutes from downtown. The airport is small enough to be easy for travelers to manage and get around upon arrival without feeling overwhelmed. As you come in for a landing, you’ll catch a glimpse of palm trees which makes it that much easier to slip into your California state of mind in no time. San Diego International Airport is served by all major U.S. airlines but does have fewer options for direct flights than neighboring LAX. There are many car rental options available to passengers upon arrival as well as rideshare services, taxis, and shuttles that depart directly from the airport as an added convenience.

Consider Taking Amtrak

Taking a train into the city is sometimes overlooked in light of flights, but Amtrak offers comprehensive services throughout California, and heading into San Diego is one of those routes! Amtrak is a great option to access the city if you’re heading in from other parts of the state and beyond and want to make more time sightseeing part of your travel experience. Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner route is incredibly scenic, traversing no less than 351 miles of the coast complete with breathtaking ocean views from the observation car. Yes, it takes longer to reach San Diego this way, but it’s a great choice for those who have time to spare and are looking to savor the moment and the sights.

Driving into the City

For travelers who prefer to get behind the wheel and road trip their way to San Diego, getting here can be equally simple. San Diego is about 94 miles from Long Beach and 315 miles from Fresno. Those driving in from San Jose will cover 416 miles of terrain to reach San Diego while San Francisco is 458 miles from the city.
